Harbor Pilots and Towboat Men is an episode of the TV program “Discovery ’70”. This program aired on ABC from 1962 until 1971 (with each year denoted by Discovery XX with XX as the year) and was an award-winning children’s program about the history and culture of America. This episode covers the daily tasks of docking ships in Port Everglades, Florida, depicting the work and life of boat pilots and tugboat captains. The episode features the SS Michelangelo. The film is a Jules Power production in association with ABC News, hosted by Bill Owen and Virginia Gibson, written by Joseph Hurley, photographed by Richard Francis, edited by Herb Aust, and produced in consultation with the National Educational Association in cooperation with the American Library Association. Port Everglades is a seaport in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, located in Broward County. Port Everglades is one of South Florida’s foremost economic engines, as it is the gateway for both international trade and cruise vacations. SS Michelangelo was an Italian ocean liner built in 1965 for Italian Line by Ansaldo Shipyards, Genoa. She was one of the last ships to be built primarily for liner service across the North Atlantic. Her sister ship was the SS Raffaello.
