XD30542 DISCOVERY ’68 ” THE RIVER PEOPLE ” RIVER DWELLING PEOPLE OF THAILAND FLOATING MARKET

This episode of the documentary TV show “Discovery ’68”, hosted by Bill Owen and Virginia Gibson, takes place in Thailand. It provides a look at river-dwelling people and their way of life. At 0:54, Bill Owen prefaces the show, speaking about Thailand. He and Virginia Gibson are in Bangkok, visiting the family of Suan Pudichat. At this time, it is the first meal of the day. People from Thailand typically only eat 2 meals a day — breakfast and supper. In between those meals, a lot of snacks are eaten. The people of Thailand eat many different kinds of foods most of which are not found where you may live, such as rice and curry. Some members of the family go work in the city, while others work near the household. There are a lot of children in the house because all the family tries to stay together. Most of the work is done on the water, as the front of the house is right on a river. The children go to school by boat and return in the same manner. Boats are common transportation here. At 4:20, Bill Owen talks about the Buddhist monks and Buddhist religion. The family raises fruit trees: papaya, coconut, mango, and bananas. Of course, all of this is brought to the market by boat. The family does not grow vegetables, so they buy daily from the vegetable boat. This idea is kind of like delivery services now. At this time, there are no refrigerators so meat and fish are bought daily. At 7:45, we see one of the boat vendors selling coffee to Suan. At 9:10, the floating market is shown. This is where the families get most of their local produce and make money sometimes. At 12:00 the Sunday market is shown, this market is much bigger than the normal floating market. Here, everything is sold from produce to animals. At 12:50, a bunch of exotic foods are shown. At 14:22, we look at one of the small sidewalk restaurants. At 14:35, all the pets shown here are shown. These pets range from monkeys, to normal pets you would see today. At 17:33, Virginia Gibson talks about the houses that Suan Pudichat’s family lives in. It is large and open with little to no furniture. The house is built on stilts to prevent it from getting flooded. At 19:50, Bill Owen talks about monks, and their lives. At 21:12 the show ends.
