XD14714 1966 ROSE PARADE WALT DISNEY THEMED “IT’S A SMALL WORLD” w/ GRAND MARSHAL WALT DISNEY

Beautifully shot, silent amateur home movie of the 77th annual Rose Parade in Pasadena, California. The parade took place on January 1, 1966, with Walt Disney serving as Grand Marshal and with the theme related to Disney’s “It’s a Small World”. (Note: tragically, Walt Disney would pass into the next world less than a year after this was filmed, on December 15, 1966.)

Close up of a banner that says “77th Annual Tournament of Roses.” Zooms of marching bands and baton twirlers. Walt Disney, the grand marshal, waves from a convertible with Mickey Mouse (00:15). The convertible is covered with roses. J. Randolph Richards waves from another rose covered convertible that says “President” (00:45). A heart themed pink float goes by full of beautiful women wearing blue gowns and tiaras. Girls march by waving multicolored flags. The UCLA Bruins football team float goes by with cheerleaders and a snarling bear wearing a jersey. Women wave from a glamorous pink and white float with butterflies on the front. A red and yellow British themed marching band leads a float with a stag and totems that says “A Royal Welcome Centennial 1966.” Canadian Mounties on horseback follow behind the float. A beauty queen waves from an elaborate float, could be the Parade Queen Carole Cotes (2:35). More beauty queens wave gracefully from floats. A baton twirler performs in a shiny silver outfit and white go-go boots. Various floats and marching bands go by. A man films one of the floats with a film camera, looks to be 16mm (4:24). The crowd can be seen in the background sitting on top of buildings, one being “See’s Candies,” and crowding the streets. Women wearing cowgirl costumes wave from a cowboy hat float. Women march together wearing tall red hats. Two women wave from a beautiful peacock float. Japanese themed floats and Japanese kids march by (6:29). Four teenage girls do a dance routine in the mouth of a green dragon. A woman waves from inside of a pink pump. A blonde woman wearing a sash that says “Miss World” waves from float. A Los Angles themed float goes by with a large film camera made of flowers. Clydesdale horses pull a large elaborate wagon. Men in fez hats ride camels and wave. Nurses wave from a float that says “Hope.” A Mexican and Aztec themed float goes by. A man speaks into a microphone from an Aladdin themed float. San Diego’s basketball team the Matadors marching band goes by. Women wave from the top of a giant pink telephone, they are also on telephones (10:54).
