XD14634 “ HUNTING AND FISHING TRIP ” 1930s HOME MOVIE w/ MODEL T FORD & AFRICAN AMERICAN MAN

Shot by an unknown amateur filmmaker, this 16mm home movie shows a simple slice of the 1930’s. It includes a hunting and fishing trip with a series of white men and an African American man who seems to be be part of the group (possibly a fairly unique circumstance given the time period). The film opens with black and white footage of ducks splashing in the water (:11). Baby chick’s play by a low wooden fence (1:20). A small fishing boat zooms towards the camera (2:39). A woman plays with two dogs (3:12). Two hunters move through corn stalks with rifles (3:51). They aim and shoot (4:06). A dog stands in pointer position as he spots a target (4:12). One of the hunters greets the pups (4:24). Another chews tobacco and spits for the camera (5:01). Their lodging is pictured (5:21). Dusty roads lead to a small town shopping area (5:39). The hunters stand in a row for the camera man (6:11) in overalls and light jacket. A Model T drives over shallow puddles (6:40). A horse and buggy stand in a shallow creek (6:55). The cameraman focuses a decent amount of time on the well dressed African American man a part of the trip (7:39) standing in the field (7:40). A well-dressed man in a low top hat passes in front of a thatched home (7:49). The troupe head out to the end of a dock (7:59) carting fishing supplies. They load into a small fishing boat (8:17). Men button up against the cold (8:34). Birds splash on the surface of the water (8:52). Two men stand in the center fishing (9:03). They return to the dock with the fishing catch in a sack (9:24).

Motion picture films don’t last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we’ve worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies — including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you’d like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we’d love to hear from you.
