Opening titles: Castle Films presents The News Parade of the Year 1955 (:06-:14). Title: Soviet Upheaval Georgy Malenkov Resigns. People walk, some applaud and then sit. Malenkov speaks. Party Boss Nikita Khrushchev names Nikolai Bulganin new premier. People applaud. Title: Churchill Retires. In April 1955, Churchill retires as Prime Minister of Great Britain. He was succeeded in office by Anthony Eden, the foreign secretary and a political protege who had long sought to replace him. Churchill shakes hands with Eden (:15-1:03). Title: Occupation Ends in Austria. “Big Four” sign a peace treaty, they are the countries of the United States, Soviet Union, France and Great Britain in Vienna, Austria. Troops march. Title: Summit Meeting at Geneva. Premier Nikolai Bulganin of the Soviet Union waves. People gather and watch as dignitaries arrive. This meeting was to ease tensions among the U.S. and the Soviet Union. U.S. President Eisenhower. Title: Adenauer in Moscow. German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer meets with people. Russia releases German prisoners of war. Crowds cheer as people arrive on trains. Families touch and kiss. Some families hold pictures of loved ones still missing(1:04-2:30). Title: Formosa Straits, 7th Fleet on Alert. U.S. Navy fleet. The United States assists with the evacuation of Tachen, in the East China Sea. U.S. patrol boats and barges. Title: 36th Eucharistic Congress in Brazil. 700,000 Catholics reaffirm their faith. Catholics march. Dictator Juan Peron’s iron rule ends. People celebrate in the streets, fires are set. Peron speaks (2:31-3:47). Title: 10th U.N. Anniversary San Francisco. People representing countries sit and listen. Title: Disasters Strike! Raging flood waters. Hurricanes and floods devastate the Northeast U.S. Children are plucked from flood waters. People in boats on flooded city streets. Sinkholes, flooded towns. Ruined streets. Raging flood waters go through city streets as rain continues to fall (3:48-4:59). Title: Doomstown – U.S.A.! Atomic bomb tests. Homes are tested against atomic shock waves. Homes explode from the flame and force of the blast. Mushroom clouds in the sky. Title: Operation Killer. A new guided missile, the Falcon, is tested. Target is sighted, missile is fired, Falcon missile heads towards target. The Falcon hits a plane and it explodes. A B-52 bomber on a tarmac. B-52 takes off into the sky (5:00-6:42). Title: Polio Scourge Halted! Women type, news cameras ready. Dr. Jonas Salk creates a polio vaccine, he speaks. Parents and children. Nurses give children the vaccination shots. Title: President Stricken! U.S. President Eisenhower has a heart attack and is recovering. He is in a wheel chair. ‘Welcome Back Ike’ signs for the fallen leader. Eisenhower appears on Veteran’s Day, November 11 to a cheering crowd. He waves and leaves in a motorcade. The White House in Washington, D.C. (6:43-8:18). End credits (8:19-8:21)
