XD14264 ROME, ITALY CITY ETERNAL ROMAN RUINS & COLISEUM 1965 EDUCATIONAL FILM

This Encyclopedia Britannica film “Rome City Eternal” (:11) takes viewers on a tour through the city of Rome and points out notable historic and religious landmarks. It was produced by F. W. and E. S. Keller (:08). The film opens with a shot of an eagle (:41) which is the symbol of Jupiter; the ancient protector and patron of Rome. Bird’s eye view footage shows the city expanse and the Colosseum (1:09). The interior of the amphitheater is shown which was constructed to sit 50,000 for elaborate battles between men, animals and even ships (1:15). The Colosseum was built by Vespasian and Titus (1:37) and had been dedicated in 80 AD. A shot follows of the Colosseum’s exterior archways (1:41). Statues around the Colosseum are pointed to beginning with the statue of Paul the Apostle to the Gentiles (2:07). This statue is set within the colonnaded square (2:24) in front of the Basilica of St. Peter (2:37). The first stone for the Basilica’s foundation was laid on April 18th, 1506 (2:46) and it was completed in 1626 (3:06). Artists such as Donato Bramante, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Bernini all completed works for the Basilica (3:06). Tapestry’s and other religious relics from within the structure are viewed (3:42). The Statue of St. Peters is pointed to (4:00) as well as Michelangelo’s Pieta (4:04). Bernini’s monument of Pope Alexander the VII (4:07), Canova’s statue of Clement XIII (4:13) as well as his Tomb of the Last of the Stewards of England (4:19) are shown. Raphael’s mosaic of the Transfiguration follows (4:29). Other notable statues and relics include Bernini’s St. Longinus (4:33), Duke Noir’s St. Andrew (4:35) as well as the towering Dome designed by Michelangelo (4:39). A fountain’s water burst is filmed from one of the many fountains in the grounds (5:10). Water from these famed fountains flow from the Sabine Hills through an aqueduct that had been built 20 centuries earlier (5:50). Within the Piazza Navona, sits Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers (6:11). Ruins from Rome’s ancient past are viewed (7:06). The grounds of Hadrian’s Palace in Tivoli follows (7:28). Within the eight-mile estate, Hadrian had constructed a miniature empire of places visited (8:37). One of the walls within the grounds is shown which had been built as a replica of a larger wall which Hadrian had constructed to defend the northern frontier from Britain (8:50). Fireworks explode and light up historic structures in celebration in modern times in the same way they had done in the 17th century (9:48). A statue of Marcus Aurelius is seen encircled in smoke from the fireworks display (10:11). The film concludes (10:32).
