XD14024 AFRICAN AMERICANS PLANTING, CULTIVATING & PICKING COTTON CROP ST. MARY’S GEORGIA (silent)

This silent reel of film shows footage shot in the American South in the 1950s and 1960s. It begins with footage from Florida showing what appears to be an mixed race crew processing a haul of fish. At 1:09, a group of African American children dance and pose for the cameraman. At 1:34, a man with a comb in his hair appears to be playing drums.

Footage starting at 1:48 shows African Americans working in cotton fields in the South. At 2:20 the white owners are visible at the farm. At 2:32 are shots of shantys on the property. At 2:41 a sign indicates that at least some of the material was shot near St. Mary’s, Georgia.

At 2:55, an African American man pilots a tractor in a fallow field. At 9:43, a team works to plant seedlings. At 10:00 the crops are irrigated. At 10:54, a team of workers tends the crops with hoes and rakes, removing weeds. At 11:20 a child is seen as part of the team.

At 12:58, a team of workers is seen prepping a tractor to plant seeds. At 14:20, pesticide is applied. At 17:00, a team including women and children are seen working the fields to get rid of weeds. At 18:20, pesticides are sprayed from the back of a tractor. At 19:53, sunset on the farm. At 21:30 the farmer’s wife (?) poses in her pickup truck. At 23:41 cotton bulbs are shown up close. At 24:37, cotton is harvested. At 26:06, cotton is shown in a field. At 26:23, the farmer’s daughter picks cotton from the plants. At 27:20, cotton is moved out of the fields in a transporter. At 27:45, an African American worker moves cotton in the transporter into bags. At 28:13 the transporter leaves the farm with the crop.
