XD13834 “ VOLKSWAGEN DEALERSHIP PROMO” 1960s VW BEETLE & VW BUS SALES AND SERVICE PROMO FILM

This 1960s color film without sound shows scenes from different Volkswagen (VW) dealerships around the United States as part of a promotional film, specifically tracing the journey of one white Volkswagen Beetle. The film opens by zooming in on a map of Maryland with Hagerstown highlighted (0:17). The camera pans around the parking lot of the Sharrett Volkswagen dealership there, then shows employees watching as a white Volkswagen Beetle with its hood up and a wheel missing is lifted onto a jack in the service shop. A toy white Beetle sits in front of a pink sign reading, “On this grand opening day of Sharrett Volkswagen, Inc. we welcome the management and staff to the Volkswagen Dealer Organization. November 18, 1969.” (1:37). The camera then zooms out to reveal that the sign sits on a shelf in a VW employee’s office. The employee opens a VW folder and shows it to another man, another VW employee. This employee points to figures on a graph next to charts showing “Monthly Sales” and “Used Car Sales” (2:01). Men at the table applaud and he sits down. A VW employee in a suit walks past a Volkswagen Bus in the showroom (3:00), asks at a counter, and goes to look at a white VW Beetle on a jack in the service shop. A customer drives a VW vehicle off the lot from the service/body shop (3:57). A VW Squareback arrives at the service area at Sharrett. The map then highlights Worcester, Virginia, and shows the Volkswagen dealership there (4:43). A salesman talks to a young family in the showroom next to a white VW Beetle; an employee takes a folder from his desk and walks into the service shop. The map then highlights Cumberland, Maryland (6:03) and the Cumberland Valley Volkswagen dealership. The camera zooms in on a “Used Cars” sign in the parking lot (6:39). A VW employee walks up to a man behind a counter to discuss something in a folder. The map highlights the Richter dealership in Morgantown, West Virginia (7:44). An employee comes into an executive’s office to show him something on a piece of paper (8:16). The camera shows tools hanging on a tool bench wall and then zooms out to reveal a white VW Beetle sitting in the service shop (8:58). The map highlights Bluefield, West Virginia, where a white VW Beetle is in the service shop (9:25). A sign in front of the counter reads, “Customer Rental Cars.” A female employee walks into a more senior employee’s office and shows him a piece of paper. The map highlights the Don Wood dealership in Chattanooga, Tennessee (10:50). A salesman walks upstairs from the showroom. A young woman with short hair tries out a VW car in the showroom (12:49). The white VW Beetle is loaded onto a trailer and driven across a bridge (14:00), presumably to a ship. The camera zooms in on a Norwegian flag on a Volkswagen ship (14:22), and then, seconds later, on an American flag at a VW dealership.

Motion picture films don’t last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we’ve worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies — including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you’d like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we’d love to hear from you.
