XD13504 1970s DRUG OVERDOSE SCARE FILM “DEAD IS DEAD” w/ GODFREY CAMBRIDGE MARIJUANA

This color educational drug scare film is an anti-drug film and is from 1970. There is music from Curtis Mayfield. Directed by and starring Godfrey Cambridge. Distributed by Oxford Films. Please note some graphic material is shown concerning drug use and overdose victims.

Opening: African American Comedian Godfrey Cambridge speaks to the viewer about how to get relief – pills. He explains how many prescription drugs are available easily and sold by many. Title: DEAD IS DEAD, hands drop pills and pill capsules over the credits (:06-3:13). A drugged out person has the shakes. He falls over on a bathroom floor, he pulls down his pants, he is suffering from withdrawal and we are seeing quitting cold turkey. The man rolls on the floor. ‘Stone Junkie’ by Curtis Mayfield plays on the soundtrack. A woman asks a pharmacist for more pills without a prescription. She waits and taps her fingers. She is given two pills. A man tries to refill diet pills and is told her needs a new prescription next time. A man asks for codeine cough medicine. A woman asks for a refill for her mom. Godfrey Cambridge plays with his watch and asks the viewer a question (3:14-6:14). Godfrey Cambridge looks at the viewer. Godfrey Cambridge holds a candy jar filled with pills of all kinds. A woman talks with Godfrey about missing pills and getting a high. Godfrey opens a case and shows off various drugs, he explains them: uppers and downers, tranquilizers, weed, glue to sniff, heroin, needles, spoons, cocaine (6:15-9:55). Suburbs. Drug dealers are in the exclusive areas. Summer festival, man has a Hash for sale sign. Woman arrested by the police. Drug pushers/users put onto a police bus under arrest. The poor of society. A funeral. Godfrey talks about the drugs in the suburbs (9:56-11:58). A trash can on stairs. An African American female crawls up the stairs, she knocks over the trash can and clutches her stomach, writhes in pain, vomits. ‘Lean on Me’ by Bill Withers plays on the soundtrack. Still photos of drug overdose victims’ bodies. Godfrey asks parents if they know if their child is on something and explains what to look for (11:59-14:44). Marijuana cigarette / joint. Marijuana can be laced with other drugs. Festival goers on drugs in some stills. A needle in an arm. The Junkie mind is explained. Abscesses on body parts. The heart of a heavy drug user is shown in graphic detail. Multiple dead bodies and body parts are shown in graphic detail, not for the squeamish. Many dead bodies strewn about different areas (car trunks, the street, etc.)(14:45-18:52). Godfrey explains that Dead is Dead and tells people to avoid drugs. He asks for people to write congressmen and to boycott certain countries who ship the USA drugs. He asks for parents to be aware. He asks to adopt the T.I.P. program (Turn In a Pusher). he asks that we take back our communities from drugs

(18:52-23:09). End credits to ‘Stone Junkie’ by Curtis Mayfield (23:10-23:40).

Godfrey MacArthur Cambridge (February 26, 1933 – November 29, 1976) was an American stand-up comic and actor. Alongside Bill Cosby, Dick Gregory, and Nipsey Russell, he was acclaimed by Time magazine in 1965 as “one of the country’s foremost celebrated Negro comedians.
