This fragmentary, silent material comes from a 35mm nitrate film containing different newsreels. It begins with President Hoover reviewing the U.S. fleet off the Virginia coast. Many battleships are visible moving in a line. Eventually a live fire exercise begins. At 1:41 a sailing vessel is seen foregrounded against a battleship (this footage is tinted). At 2:07 is a brief aerial shot of the fleet. At 2:27 the fleet moves towards New York. At 3:00 is a wonderful raking shot of the USS Nevada underway. At 3:16, an MGM International Newsreel proclaims the rescue of five men from the sinking schooner Northern Light by the crew of the liner Baltic. This incident took place in December of 1929. A news article described the rescue this way: “In a wind of hurricane force yesterday the White Star liner Baltic stood
by the stricken schooner Northern Light, out of St. John’s, N. F., and
saved five of a crew of six men who were forced to abandon the light
vessel in the Winter storm. The lost man was Rex Parsons, 20 years old,
a seaman. ” At 7:14 footage of a warship, probably a battleship, under construction is shown. The film ends with footage from 1930, Sir Thomas Lipton is seen as his yacht Shamrock is launched to contend for the America’s Cup.
