XD13324 ” DAIRY FARM TO DOOR ” 1960s MILK PRODUCTION DAIRY INDUSTRY EDUCATIONAL FILM

This agriculture educational film was produced by Charles Cahill & Associates in the 1960s. At the beginning of the reel, a young boy appears on screen looking on as milk cows graze in stocks on a farm. At 00:55 a narrator describes the diet and traits of dairy cows, mentioning that they feed on hay and silage, a very nutritious and easy to digest green commonly used for the livestock. Close-ups of cows eating and footage of them being herded by farmers continues. Music is mentioned as a tool used to calm the dairy cows and they are given showers each day before being milked (01:37-02:30). From 02:40 the film focuses on the milking process, depicting the machinery used as well as each step of the process from hand squeezing to the stainless steel pipes that carry the milk to the storage tank. The processing plant used for the milk is called a creamery and is shown at 04:04 after the viewer watches a truck transport the dairy to the facility. Refrigerated storage units hold the milk and keep it cool before it is sent to the pasteurizer to kill any germs at 04:38. Inspection of the milk product occurs before the milk is prepared for distribution. Close footage of the bottling process is shown around five minutes into the short film. All aspects of the creamery facility are shown, including the factory assembly line that cleans the returned milk bottles from consumers (05:02-07:21). The rest of the cycle of dairy from farm to door, or factory to consumer, is shown along with milk men delivering the product to stores and homes. The process comes to a conclusion in this educational film with a view of a young boy drinking milk at a table at 10:15.
