XD13224 1954 RAYETTE COSMETICS & COSMETOLOGY PROMO FILM WOMEN’S PERMANENT WAVE HAIR STYLE

This color educational/promotional film from 1954 is about Rayette Cosmetics and was directed by Richard Jamieson. In 1936, Raymond E. Lee, a University of Minnesota graduate and creator of a permanent-wave treatment for women’s hair, had moved into and renamed the building Raymond Laboratories. By 1951, Lee had changed his company’s name to Rayette. The company’s products were famous for creating the Rayette Wave. In 1963, Rayette introduced Aqua Net, which became the top-selling hairspray in the United States. Rayette also acquired the Faberge cosmetic and fragrance company in the 1960s, but vacated the building by 1971.

Opening titles (:06-:23). A sign shows Riverton, pop. 13,474. Cars drive down main street. A library, post office, and high school (Riverton High) are shown. Students leave the school. Girls sit around and talk. A class counselor talks with a student, Vicky, who narrates the film at times (:24-2:35). Vicky goes and visits Mrs. Roberts at a hair salon. The two talk. A hair stylist works on a customer as Vicky watches. Another worker works on a woman’s hair. Close on nails being manicured. A woman receives a shampoo while Vicky watches. Woman get their hair blow dryad. Mrs. Roberts shows flyers and brochures to Vicky (2:36-5:18). Vicky, the student, in her cap and gown graduating high school. A train rides the rails. A taxi. Vicky rings a doorbell at a house and is greeted by the woman who runs the living situations there. Vicky meets her roommate, Gail (5:19-6:26). Gail and Vicky walk the streets of the city. They have lunch at a nice restaurant. They visit a lion in the zoo as well as the theatre. The two women wear sunglasses and smile (6:27-7:06). Students in class. Cosmetology classes for Vicky and Gail. A teacher explains what cosmetology is. Vicky works on a person’s hair and is instructed by a teacher as she straightens hair. A girl walks with a book on her head – to teach good posture. The women laugh as they drop the books from their heads. Proper shampooing techniques are taught. A woman has her head shampooed. A dryer is turned on by a finger (7:07-10:48). Cosmetics are on a shelf. Vicky straightens a client’s hair while being instructed. A woman is given a manicure by another student. Close on the nails being filed. A woman raises her hand in class. Hair coloring is done on a person. An instructor shampoos excess color out of hair. Woman gather around a woman who had her hair tinted (10:49-12:31). A hair stylist visits, works on someone’s hair, and teaches the class. Vicky has her hair worked on. Vicky sleeps with books nearby. Girls picnic with a boy. Four girls in their dorm room talk. An instructor explains how they have all received training and are ready for the real world. Vicky stares and smiles. The instructor gives them information and more training (12:32-15:08). Vicky and Gail pack and talk. Vicky opens a letter (15:09-16:02). Main street in Riverton. Vicky walks down the street. Vicky thinks in front of the salon (16:03-16:36). End credits (16:37-16:44)
