XD12874 1939 HOME MOVIE TULANE UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL GAMES & NEW ORLEANS

Shot by a member of the Forcheeimen (or possibly the Forchheimer) family, this 8mm home movie from the late 1940s or early 1940s shows a trip to New Orleans, including footage of a burlesque show. It also contains football games and a family wedding.

The film opens with slow motion footage of solo women (:04) and pairs on roller skates (:20). A short haired blonde in satin and fur appears before a long drawn curtain at a burlesque theater (1:22). It’s a close shot and a dark stage; she peels off her jacket and dress (1:27) and the show starts. Blurry shots show chefs in a kitchen (1:48). Neon lights flash news about the Nazi’s threatening to invade — possibly Poland or the Rhineland (1:53). Two women greet under wide hats (1:57). One woman wears a fat flower on her lapel. Close shots follow pedestrians on the street (2:07). Baton twirlers and the marching band stream onto the green for a football game (2:10). An advertisement for Seagram’s 7 lines the wall, location appears to be the Old Tulane football stadium (note “Tulane” on the scoreboard at 2:34). The camera pans around the stands (2:28). A kick off (2:38). The family heads for a restaurant (3:53). Patrons line a long bar or soda fountain (4:02). Much of the fashion of the era was fairly conservative; men in trim suits and women in button up blouses (4:25). Outfits went incomplete without short gloves, fedoras or bicorn hats. A woman orders a drink from the bartender (4:38). Footage runs down the street capturing pedestrians along the sidewalk (5:17). A man in brown suit and hat steps from a bar, beer glass still in hand (5:22). Two women smoke in blouses making faces for the camera (5:29). Male athletes run around the track (5:48). Other track and field footage at an unidentified field show a discus toss (6:01) and high jumps (6:22). The family is pictured in black lace against lush green foliage (7:34). Another football game interrupts (7:53). This is most likely the 1940 Sugar Bowl between Tulane Green Wave and the Texas A&M Aggies (8:06). The final score was 14 to 13 favoring the Texas Aggies. Spectators stream onto the field as the game is won (10:42). The Aggies march off (10:46). The brass band still blows in the stands (10:55) as the mob of fans fill the lot (11:00). A speedboat zooms across the water dragging a water ski rider (11:13). A close shot follows of another speed boat and water ski rider (11:31). A yellow sea plane peels off (11:44). Footage of a wedding begins as young man scoops up a lady in pink (11:59) outside a colonial style home. Other family members wave as they exit (12:32). The bride and groom; now dressed for the occasion, smooch for the camera (13:09). The city skyline is pictured (14:19). A small dingy boat floats at the water’s edge (14:43). The family gathers outside a country home (15:12). A USMC Marine Corporal is pictured (16:01) in full uniform and with his partner (16:15). Another football game follows (16:44). The marching band moves across center field at half time (19:15).

Motion picture films don’t last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we’ve worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies — including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you’d like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we’d love to hear from you.
