Project Warrior, 7:51 profiles Colonel Walker Melville “Bud” Mahurin (December 5, 1918 – May 11, 2010) a United States Air Force officer and aviator. During World War II, while serving in the United States Army Air Forces, he was a flying ace. Mahurin was the first American pilot to become a double ace in the European Theater. He was the only United States Air Force pilot to shoot down enemy planes in both the European and Pacific Theaters and the Korean War. During World War II he was credited with 20.75 aerial victories, making him the sixth-highest American P-47 ace. He was credited with shooting down 3.5 MiG-15s in Korea, giving him a total of 23.25 aircraft destroyed in aerial combat. P-51 Mustangs drop bombs and fall out of formation, 8:00. Walker Mahurin joined the 56th Fighter Group in July 1942 and arrived in the UK in January 1943, where he was promoted to Captain and Flight Leader of the 63rd Fighter Squadron.

He claimed his first victories during the Schweinfurt- Regensburg mission, when he shot down two FW 190s, one flown by Luftwaffe Ace, Major Wilhelm Galland. By November 1943 Mahurin had become the first American “Double Ace. Mahurin would claim 20 kills in the European Theatre of Operations. His final kill in March 1944 was a Do-17, which he shot down over France, his aircraft had sustained heavy battle damage and Mahurin was forced to bail out. Philip Gerald Cochran (born in Erie, Pennsylvania January 29, 1910 – August 26, 1979) was an officer in the United States Army Air Corps and the United States Army Air Forces. Cochran developed many tactical air combat, air transport, and air assault techniques during the war, particularly in Burma during operations as co-commander (with Col John R. Alison) of the 1st Air Commando Group. Cochran was the inspiration behind characters in the Terry and the Pirates and Steve Canyon by Milton Caniff. Pilot in the cockpit, flying his plane, 11:00.
