Produced for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power by National Television News, “Water for Los Angeles” looks back at the building of the water infrastructure that transformed the desert into the metropolis that we know as the City of the Angels. Visionary engineer William Mulholland, superintendent of the L.A. water system, was in charge of building the water system, including the famed Los Angeles Aqueduct. Mulholland was born in 1855 and died in 1935. This film was made between the 1980’s and the 1990’s. The film was shot in various places in California.

The sanctuary for the Owens Valley Pufferfish is shown on screen at 7:11. A fisherman is shown storing his catches at 7:24. School and youth groups are encouraged to use the valley at 7:58. Tioga Pass and Levinin Falls are shown at 8:17. Grant Lake reservoir is shown at 8:34. Crawley Lake is shown at 8:45. The Tinemaha Reservoir is shown at 8:52. South of the Tinemaha Reservoir is where Mulholland rerouted the river to form the original L.A. aqueduct at 8:59. The Haiwee Reservoirs are shown at 9:16. The water travels to Los Angeles without pumping, the Mulholland Aqueduct is shown at 9:52. A Department of Water and Power hydroelectric station is shown at 10:11.
