XD10734 “MAN-FOR-BOY CLUB” L.S. LAWO BOYS CLUB MEMPHIS TENNESSEE YMCA / KIWANIS SUMMER CAMP

This color educational film is about the story of the Man-For-Boy Club, sponsored by the YMCA and the Kiwanis Club. There is no copyright at the beginning or end of the film so the date of the production remains unclear. Research puts this film circa the late 1940s/early 1950s.

Opening titles: MAN FOR BOY, The Story of the L.S. Lawo Man-For-Boy Club, sponsored by the YMCA and the Kiwanis Club (:16-:40). Our narrator, James R. Massey, the public relations director for Memphis Works of International Harvester. Massey is shown with his family (his wife & 2 daughters). Shots and information of his old neighborhood, the bikes, the boys, the people, the nicknames. Boys wrestle one another, play dice (:40-3:07). The principal of the school catches them acting up. Our narrator talks with the Kiwanis leader. Kiwanis sponsors are shown. Information on the Little Kiwanis club (3:08-5:56). What is talked about at Kiwanis meetings, how they mentor, the games they played (darts for one). Kiwanis sponsors and the boys they mentor at the annual Christmas party (5:57-7:47). The originator of the Kiwanis little boys club is at the party, he founded the little boys club in 1928. Prominent business men attended and spoke to teach the boys. Mothers and wives attended. Entertainment was a magician (7:48-9:15). Distribution of fruits, nuts, candies and gifts. The Man for Boy committee has a meeting. All the boys who had nothing but the streets of Memphis were the reason this club was created. So the boys would have a place to swim and be safe and do activities. Shots of the boys in the pool (9:16-10:33). A bus heads for summer camp. Camp Pickwick. More than 100 boys go to this camp. They have opportunity to learn and grow. The camp is not for profit. Shots of the camp grounds (10:34-11:55). The boys eat at camp. These boys need a friend, according to our narrator (11:56-12:59). End credits, along with shots of USA Flag flapping in the breeze (13:00-13:20).
