XD10084 SALLY RAND BALLOON BUBBLE DANCE PERFORMANCE LITA BARON & GRACIE BARRIE 1940s MUSIC VIDEO

Released by Official Films for the home market, this collection of “soundies” — 1940s music videos — includes a Bubble Dance performance by Sally Rand starting at the 4:00 mark. This particular performance by Rand is quite tame compared to some, as oftentimes she was scantily dressed or not dressed at all behind her plastic bubble. The film also includes an incomplete rendition of “I Wanna Make Him Whistle” sung by Lita Baron aka “Isabelita”. Baron was a Spanish-born American actress and singer who appeared in movies and television shows for over 30 years. Also on this reel, a performance of “I’ve Got to Get Hot” (nice double entendre title!) by Gracie Barrie at 1:12. The song is about a woman who’d rather be singing….but until she gets popular, she has to bring in the bucks to pay the rent. Barrie was a stylish singer for big bands and some 30s Broadway musicals, and sang with drummer Abe Lyman’s band before joining her husband, Dick Stabile’s orchestra as vocalist in 1940. She led Stabile’s orchestra during WWII but faded from the scene after divorcing him after WWII ended.

Sally Rand was an American burlesque dancer, vedette, and actress, most noted for her ostrich feather fan dance and balloon bubble dance. She also performed under the name Billie Beck.
