RW00044 GOLD & SILVER BAR 16mm HOME MOVIE SHOT BY U.S. NAVY SAILOR PRE-REVOLUTIONARY HAVANA CUBA

Shot surreptitiously by a U.S. Navy sailor at or near the Gold & Silver Bar, this 1950s silent home movie presents a rare look at pre-revolutionary Havana’s red light district. This is the Cuba of dance halls, slummy bars and working girls, where booze flowed for sailors on leave, and dollars quickly changed hands in exchange for intimate favors and tourist trinkets sold by street urchins. Although the material is frustratingly hard to assess due to its poor exposure and sloppy camera work, this film nevertheless presents a fascinating glance back at the Bautista era.
