The New Jersey Turnpike. This 1950s era, color film, visits the famous New Jersey Turnpike which begins at the George Washington Bridge connecting New Jersey and Manhattan. An animated map follows its route, down the Hudson and through industrial New Jersey, all the way to the Delaware Memorial Bridge outside of Philadelphia. A map of the United States overlays an aerial view of the highway 1:00. Aerial view of the Turnpike and its tollbooths 1:16. The Turnpike weaves through industrial and urban/suburban neighborhoods 2:10. The New Jersey Turnpike consists of hundreds of overpasses 2:22. New Jersey’s famous meadowlands 2:45. Heavy traffic clogs the streets coming into the city 3:17. Traffic meets at a four way stop sign in a suburban neighborhood 3:35. Policeman directs traffic in a downtown area 4:15. Many street signs are flashed on the screen 4:26. Traffic lights blink 4:36. Driving on the Turnpike is nothing like driving in downtown traffic; the ride is smooth, open and relaxed 4:59. A car pulls off at a service area on the Turnpike 5:30. Service areas are set far back from the road for safety and serenity 5:45. A spacious dividing strip separates the oncoming traffic 6:10. Turnpike toll booth operators warn about inclement weather and troopers adjust speed limits in the event of fog or smoke 10:20. Troopers aid motorists with flares in the event of thick fog 10:37. New Jersey industrial area is shown 10:43. A trooper helps a motorist and calls in to Central for assistance 11:20. The radio network at Turnpike headquarters is connected with service trucks throughout the area 11:50. Radio control calls a truck and the driver responds on his way to assist the motorist 12:12. The New Jersey Turnpike, Authority offices. The planning department made sure the needs of motorists are met at every turn 13:35. Models of rest areas are shown 13:48. Different types of gasoline are offered at the Turnpike’s many gas station/rest areas 14:10. Restaurants are open 24 hours a day, every day 14:28. The planning board meets to talk about competitive bids for services, restaurants and different service operators 15:00. A couple walks out of a Turnpike restaurant and consults a map 15:22. A mechanic services the tires of a large truck 15:28. A man uses a remote system to execute an oil change for a woman and her child 15:43. Radio dispatched service station trucks patrol the Turnpike for motorists in need 16:04. Standard equipment of the radio dispatch service station trucks can handle almost any roadside emergency 16:20. Traffic service attendance help motorists with their automotive needs 17:00. Man checks the fluids under a car’s hood 17:15. The Pikettes, ladies representing the Turnpike who help motorists with directions, local attractions or other assistance on their journey 17:30. A family returns to their car and a serviceman advises the driver that he has a worn fan belt before he gets back on the Turnpike 18:00. The man denies the serviceman’s advice and later finds himself stuck on the side of the road with a broken fan belt 18:16. The couple discusses how to get help 18:38. Man waits on the side of the road 19:09. After a short while a Turnpike serviceman shows up in his truck and fixes the man’s fan belt 20:00. The man receives another call from control 20:27. The man puts out safety reflectors in the road 20:38. Little girl plays with a pop-up book in the back seat 20:50. The fan belt is fixed in the man is on his way 21:05.
