This 1956 color educational film about American engineers was produced as a Jam Handy Picture for the Chevrolet Division of General Motors, making this film a subtle long advertisement. Different radio telescopes pick of sounds (:35-1:20). Men and women are shown in laboratories. Another writes mathematical equations on a blackboard. Different quick views representing engineers are shown (1:21-2:30). Shown are an hydroelectric dam, rivers splitting around a city, skyscrapers, office buildings, and storefronts. Cities are flown over, showcasing the number of structures (2:31-5:33). An oil rig drill is lowered and an oil derrick is shown in the ocean (5:34-6:34). Mining is shown as a large scoop moves materials. A helicopter searches for metals using a Geiger counter. A rocky hillside explodes. The materials are loaded in open train car beds (6:35-8:07). Chemical engineering is represented with a factory. A research engineer uses a microscope. A blinking “Danger Magnet ON” sign is shown at an atom smasher (8:08-10:00). Civil engineering is represented with unfinished building structures followed by them finished (10:01-11:09). Electrical towers are shown, followed by blinking neon lights at night. A professional baseball game is played at night, lit by large banks of lights. A TV camera records a couple dancing. A telephone TV shows a conversation between two people (11:10-12:28). Electrical coding is followed by 1956 appliances (12:29-12:54). An atomic-powered submarine periscope moves through the water. A jet-powered airplane takes off. The SS United States ocean liner moves through the water. Other transportation shown is a train and bus (12:55-14:13). Heavy equipment is used to make roads, which are paved with concrete. Tunnels and bridges are shown. A cloverleaf road pattern is shown from above. A factory parking lot is filled with 1950s Chevy cars and trucks (14:14-16:48). A plant engineer moves around miniature factory equipment. Machines stamp out metal car parts. The assembly line of parts being made is shown. A Precisionnaire checks precision. A car engine is lowered from the ceiling. Other parts also move through a hanging assembly line. Workers spray paint machinery as it passes by. Various car parts are shown in a stylistic manner. Draftsmen are shown in silhouette (16:49-24:01). A female hand wearing a plaid glove adjusts a side mirror. Seat and window controls are shown. The temperature controls are shown on a shiny dashboard (24:02-24:33). High rise buildings, hotels, theatres, bridges, overpasses, roundabouts, and roads are shown from overhead. The camera passes Mount Rushmore (24:34-27:50).
