This 1975 revised documentary is about man’s fight against disease. It’s sponsored by Shell and The World Health Organization, produced by Stuart Legg, and directed by Michael Clarke. Facial disfigurations, elephantiasis, and blindness are shown in Africa (1:36-2:33). Van Leeuwenhoek and his primitive microscope are shown (2:34-2:55). A variety of organisms are seen through a microscope. A hand turns microscope lenses to show microbes (2:56-3:42). Microbes are swabbed onto petri dishes, placed inside a cabinet to incubate, and opened to reveal growth (3:44-4:15). The camera pans up a creek to animal bones (4:42-5:09). The camera pans bottles and stacked petri dishes to scientists with a microscope (5:10-5:24). The microbes of leprosy are shown, followed by the hands, feet, faces, and backs of lepers (5:25-6:00). Spirochetes are shown, followed by inflamed crusty spots and deformities (6:01-6:35). An elephantiasis worm wiggles under a microscope, followed by people with its deformities (6:36-6:58). A scientist views viruses under an electron microscope: influenza, smallpox, polio, and trachoma. An inner eyelid is affected with trachoma (7:00-7:40). Fingers type on a radiogram (8:18-8:25). The spread of disease: A large crowd. A woman touches her face and then sugar cubes; another drops them into coffee. A baker picks his nose. Children share a glass. Flies crawl on butchered meat. People swat tsetse flies and mosquitos. Tick and body lice crawl (8:41-9:45). A nurse draws a vaccine into a needle. Villagers receive vaccines (10:11-10:50). Antibiotics are made. A doctor gives a shot in the hip. The effects on a microbe are shown. Bottles of vaccines move on an assembly line (10:52-11:55). A Thailand woman stands on an outline of feet and close-ups show her receiving a shot of penicillin in her hip. A child is shown before and after receiving medicine (12:13-12:55). Lepers receive sulfur injections (13:01-13:38). Trachoma in Spain is treated with antibiotic ointment on eyelids (13:45-14:24). Overcrowding in slums is shown (14:48-15:04). South American armadillos harbor bugs that cause Chagas disease. One of the bugs crawls across a sleeping child’s face (15:12-15:38). The tip of an instrument removes saliva from a female mosquito with malaria parasites (15:40-16:04). A man shakes with malaria (16:23). Insecticides are tested in lab conditions. A wand sprays insecticides outside and inside housing structures (16:34-18:10). Spider monkeys carry the Yellow Fever virus, passed via mosquitos. A line of people receive a vaccine. Men hand-spray mosquito-prone areas (18:32-20:23). Cargo ship crates include large canisters of pesticides then transported by horse, boat, truck, and motorbikes to areas needing spraying. Disease prevention information is passed through conversation, meetings, and training locals (20:28-22:40). A doctor examines a bloated baby. People receive oral medication. People are examined by medical personnel (22:42-23:15). Shown are slums, open drains, and rivers simultaneously used for drinking water and washing (23:30-23:55). A hand turns on an outdoor spigot (23:54). A child sticks out his tongue during an examination (25:08). A tribal woman rolls out dough on a flat stone and gives some to a young girl to knead in her hands (26:16-26:43).
