GG46825 ” PLAY IN THE SNOW ” 1945 EDUCATIONAL FILM MAKING A SNOWMAN, SKIING, SLEDDING

Dating to 1945, “Play in the Snow” is an Erpi Classroom Film which was produced by Encyclopedia Britannica. It shows children playing in the snow, starting with images of children dressing for the wintery outdoors. It then shows them involved in winter sports, making a snowman, playing fox & geese, sledding & skiing, ski jumping and more.

00:00 – 0:57: The scene opens with a winter setting where snow covers the town. A snow plow is clearing the streets as children prepare to play in the snow. Bill Clark dresses in a loose sweater for warmth without over-bundling.

0:57 – 1:42: Bill, along with his siblings Nell and Charlie, gear up with appropriate winter clothing. They decide to make a snowman, initiating the activity with enthusiasm.

1:42 – 3:16: The children work together to build a snowman, named Wellington, by rolling snowballs to form its body parts. They add details like a nose, buttons, and a hat, illustrating the joy and teamwork involved in this classic winter activity.

3:16 – 4:35: After finishing with the snowman, the children engage in another game, “Fox and Geese,” where they create a circular track with spokes, designating one child as the ‘fox’ who tries to catch the ‘geese’ as they move around the pattern.

4:35 – 6:57: The scene shifts to sledding. The children slide down a hill marked by flags, ensuring safety by waiting for a clear path. Various types of sleds are shown, and they enjoy multiple runs up and down the hill.

6:57 – 8:42: Transition to skiing, where the kids ensure their equipment is secure. They demonstrate skiing techniques like walking with skis, using the herringbone step to ascend, and sliding down small hills, highlighting the basics of skiing.

8:42 – 9:33: The skiing continues with the children tackling steeper hills, showing more advanced techniques like sidestepping to go up and the snowplow to control speed while descending.

9:33 – 10:28: The final segment shows the children at a school slide, where they engage in ski jumping. The script emphasizes the thrill of skiing, particularly with the imagery of flying through the air, enjoying the winter landscape.

This script captures the essence of winter fun, focusing on children’s activities in the snow, from building snowmen to sledding and skiing, showcasing how they adapt to and enjoy the cold weather.

Motion picture films don’t last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we’ve worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies — including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you’d like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we’d love to hear from you.
