This silent, black and white footage represents outtakes from a late 1960s/early 1970s documentary film made about Synanon and specifically, one of the group’s “Phoenix House” locations. Unfortunately, this film contains multiple segments with “lip flap” where interviewees are speaking. Places and things shown include a Town Fair supermarket (1:11/12:41), a Synanon House Ford Falcon, Synanon House / Phoenix House (2:00), Synanon is People signage (3:15), dining area in Synanon House (5:40), residents perform yard work (7:30) and do laundry, group session at Synanon House (23:00).
Synanon, originally known as Tender Loving Care, was a new religious movement founded in 1958 by Charles E. “Chuck” Dederich Sr. in Santa Monica, California, United States. Originally established as a drug rehabilitation program, Synanon developed into an alternative community centered on group truth-telling sessions that came to be known as the “Synanon Game”, a form of attack therapy. Synanon disbanded in 1991 after several members were convicted of offenses including financial misdeeds, evidence tampering, terrorism, and even attempted murder.
Motion picture films don’t last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we’ve worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies — including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you’d like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we’d love to hear from you.
