Shot by an amateur American filmmaker sometime after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas, Texas, this brief 8mm home movie shows views of Dealey Plaza and the Texas School Book Depository, including an image at (:16) of a red circle in the window where Lee Harvey Oswald allegedly fired the fatal shots. The film also includes interesting shots of the area around the Grassy Knoll and Bryan pergola on the north side of Elm Street. This includes the sign for the R.L. Thornton Freeway (:54) and the Stemmons Freeway sign with the railroad bridge in the background. At (1:28) a makeshift memorial is seen, left by the 7th grade class at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Mission School, Dallas, Texas. As the film comes to a close at (3:25) a bridge over the Mississippi River is shown.
Motion picture films don’t last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we’ve worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies — including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you’d like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we’d love to hear from you.
