XD94275a “ BEYOND BENGAL ” 1934 HARRY SCHENCK MALAYAN JUNGLE EXPEDITION MALAYSIA PART 1

This 1934 semi-documentary film “Beyond Bengal” was written, photographed and directed by Harry Schenck, and features Schenck and companions Joan Baldwin and John Martin, and a teen-aged Malay couple, Ali and Bee. Schenck, a Hollywood movie cameraman turned amateur explorer, obtains the permission of the Sultan of Perak, Malaysia to conduct an expedition deep into the Malayan Jungle. Schenck’s party hunts and kills monkeys, tigers, and leopards during their journey. They also encounter different types of snakes, including one that catches an expedition member. The film ends with them encountering a herd of wild elephants. While the film is meant to function almost like a documentary, many scenes are either staged or crudely fashioned with editing techniques, particularly those with tigers and leopards.
