Dating to late 1941, this UFA German newsreel was dubbed in Spanish, presumably so that it could be shown in Franco’s fascist era Spain. It starts with a commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s death, including concerts and memorial celebrations. It then shifts to a variety of other topics, including a New Year’s Day piglet race, a sword dance performance in Berlin, asports festival of the Luftwaffe in Berlin, the formation of a European press front in Vienna, the declaration of war by Italy, Germany, and Japan on the United States, Luftwaffe reconnaissance over the English Channel, and finally U-boat submarine operations in the Atlantic, including attacks on British merchant ships.

Motion picture films don’t last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we’ve worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies — including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you’d like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we’d love to hear from you.
