XD82365 1942 GERMAN SPORTS NEWSREEL “STRENGTH THROUGH JOY” BOXING, CYCLING, GLIDING

This 1942 (?) UFA German newsreel is presented in Spanish, apparently so that audiences in fascist-controlled Spain could learn about events in the Third Reich. This wartime film primarily covers sporting events and includes segments about: western Holland harvest festival, horse riding with draught and work horses, a visit to a Wehrmacht training camp near Berlin, record-setting performances by a Swedish runner in Gothenburg, the 3rd German Boxing Championships in Berlin, steeplechase race in Belgium, the traditional St. Hubert hunt in Denmark, greyhound racing in Brussels, the ninth anniversary of the German organization Strength through Joy, joyful activities on beaches and swimming pools, views of Berlin and its swimming stadium, the growing passion for gliding among German youth, and an international cycling race in Vienna. The film is notable in that it shows aspects of “everyday life” in Germany and the veneer of normalcy that was maintained by the fascist regime during wartime.

Note: NS Gemeinschaft Kraft durch Freude (German for ‘Strength Through Joy’) was a German NSDAP-operated leisure organization in Nazi Germany and part of the German Labour Front. Set up in November 1933 as a tool to promote the advantages of Nazism to the German people and internationally, it was also used to ease the process of the rearmament of Germany. Through its structure of organized events and promotion of propaganda, it was also intended to prevent dissident and anti-state behavior. By 1939, it had become the world’s largest tourism operator.

Motion picture films don’t last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we’ve worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies — including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you’d like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we’d love to hear from you.
