17064 SILENT 1970s HOME MOVIE VISIT TO 94TH AERO SQUADRON VAN NUYS BUSCH GARDENS CONCORDE LANDS

Shot by an unknown person who was an aviator, this silent 16mm home movies has various segments. It starts with a ground check of a passenger aircraft marked “H.B.” on the tail. It is believed for various reasons this is the 3M Corporation’s corporate airplane, and that H.B. stands for its President Herbert P. Buetow who served from 1953-1963. At 2:50 are shots of flying over the Los Angeles vicinity. At 3:27 are shots of the 94th Aero Squadron restaurant, probably the location in Van Nuys, California. At 6:30 are shots of what appears to be the Busch Gardens Amusement Park. At 7:27 a Goodyear blimp is shown, tail N38A identifies it as the Mayflower and it is most likely at Watson Island, Miami, Florida in this film. At 9:10 an airport is shown with various jumbo jets including an American Airlines 727. At 10;24 the supersonic Concorde lands at JFK Airport. At 11:30 are aerial shots from a moving airplane. At 12:54 a pilot wearing a special hood for instrument flight is shown. At 13:24 the wheel of the plane is seen with the ground coming up. At 14:30 the aircraft is towed into a hangar. A sign on the outside of the building at 14:27 seems to indicate this is 3M aviation at Holman Field, Minnesota.

Motion picture films don’t last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we’ve worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies — including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you’d like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we’d love to hear from you.
