Carnival is a black and white film put out by Sterling Films, produced by Bud Gamble, with narration by Ben Kramer. It shows Coney Island, in Brooklyn, New York, in the mid 1940’s, the birthplace of the American Amusement Parks, and lets you experience the rides of that day. Coney Island was started in the 1830’s. In 1897, Captain Paul Boyton, opened a collection of amusement rides and Coney Island expanded from there. People strolling through the streets headed for the carnival (0:33-0:40). The Wonder Wheel, invented by Charles Herman, and built between 1918 and 1920 by the Eccentric Ferris Wheel Company (0:41-1:33). 1930’s Bomber ride (1:35-1:58). The Hurricane which was created in the 1940’s (1:59-2:12). People dancing on the beach (2:13-2:38). Children eating ice cream cones on the Coney Island Boardwalk, or the Riegelmann Boardwalk, opened in 1923 (2:39-2:46). Kiddy Train Ride to kiddy land (2:47-2:55), Small Ferris wheel for small people, Cars that go around in a circle (2:55-3:09), and Fire Engine rides (3:10-3:31). Art fun on the beach (3:32-3:45). Silver Rockets to rides (4:08-4:25). The Merry-go-round or Carousel has been around since the mid-19th century (4:26-5:46). The Parachute Jump originally built for the 1939 New York World’s Fair was then called the Life Savers Parachute Jump (6:07-6:49). Guessing your weight and the chalkware carnival prizes you could win (6:50-7:10). The Cyclone Roller Coaster, built in 1927, was built by the Harry C. Baker Company and the National Bridge Company (7:15-8:04).
