44554 “ HAWAII THE BIG ISLAND ” 1950s HOME MOVIE HILO PORT PARKER CATTLE RANCH FLOWERS

Shot by an unknown tourist, this late 1950s or early 1960s silent home movie shows some of the sights on the Big Island in Hawaii. This includes mostly natural sights like different volcanoes and the aftermath that their eruptions have left. The cameraperson was also particularly interested in botany and flowers with extensive footage of native species and slides showing some of their scientific names. There is also fascinating footage in this reel of cattle on what might be the Parker Ranch. Here Paniolo cowboys are seen herding cattle into the ocean and then hoisting them onto a boat for transport to the slaughterhouse.

Motion picture films don’t last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we’ve worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies — including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you’d like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we’d love to hear from you.
