This educational film depicts Galilee; a mountainous region in northern Israel known for the Sea of Galilee where tradition states Jesus walked on water.The film dates to the mid to late 1950’s pointing to specific religious landmarks and their significance. It was presented by Films of the Nations (:09) with Peter Allen as the narrator (:29). Produced by Maurice Broen (:34).

It opens with a shot of Galilee (:55) and the narrator comments that it is “the ancient Roman province in Palestine”. The word Galilee means ‘the circle’ (1:02). Upper Galilee is a highland country with a pleasant climate and lower Galilee is a region of valleys and fertile land (1:09). The area where the plateau descends (1:23) with the Sea of Galilee below (1:27). The Jordan River runs here (1:30). Mount of Beatitudes is a hill from which it is said Jesus had delivered his sermon of Christian Beatitude (1:37). Carmel Mount near Haifa (1:46). Sitting on the northern end of the country, is the Stella Maris Monastery; a Carmelite church (1:55). A view is provided from where the church rests of the Mediterranean Sea as well as the Sea of Galilee (2:00). A monument is shown marking the common grave of the French soldiers of Bonaparte (2:12). Within the church is an altar with a statue of Our Lady the Virgin Mary holding her son (2:25). The Sacred Heart statue is also pointed out (2:38). Below the main altar is a small cave which had been the dwelling place of the prophet Elijah (2:50). The walls are shown to be charred by thousands of candles burnt by those who take pilgrimage here to worship (3:03). A wooden statue of the prophet Elijah (3:17) sits on an altar at the inner end of the cave (3:17). A town in lower Galilee is viewed (3:39) where it was said Jesus was to have spent his youth with Mary and Joseph. The streets of Nazareth follow (3:58). The Fountain of the Virgin Mary is a religious relic which had been restored in 1862 (4:04). Within the church of Annunciation; constructed in 1730, a high altar is seen (4:24). The Esdraelon plain sits below Mount Tabor (4:39). This was said to be the location of the Transfiguration of Christ and a painting follows depicting this religious scene (4:50). The Franciscan church of the Transfiguration (5:03) sits on the summit of Mount Tabor. This was constructed along the walls of an ancient Benedictine fortress and in front of the church, the 800-year-old remains of the Benedictine covenant which had been built over a fourth century Basilica is seen (5:16). To the east are two other ruins of chapels (5:38). A span of some of Mount Tabor’s religious edifices follows (6:13). The area was prone to dispute and after Benedictine monks had been entrusted with the custody of the edifices (6:13), twice in the following century, the convents of the Benedictines had been destroyed. Buildings are shown which had been destroyed by Egyptian warriors in the middle of the 13th century (6:36). From one the top of one of the old fortifying walls, the church of St. Elijah can be viewed (6:51). From the western wall of the fortress, the wall of Josephus is seen that had been built by the Israelites for their final stand against the Romans (7:08). Franciscan brothers are seen walking through the area and stopping to view a sundial (7:37). The chapel in the center of the plateau on Mount Tabor is where Jesus was said to have gone after the Transfiguration (7:47). The village of Daburiyya (8:38) is where it is said Jesus had left nine of his apostles prior to climbing to the site of the Transfiguration. The village of Cana is seen (8:44) where Jesus was said to have assisted in weddings alongside his disciples (9:03). It is also said that in this village is where he had turned water into wine (9:14). Cana’s church is viewed (9:29). At the foot of a mountain a church is seen which had been erected to commemorate the multiplication of loaves and fish (11:35). A painting of this religious event follows (11:49). A chapel is pointed to that serves the many pilgrims traveling for worship here (12:03). The film begins to wrap up with close up shots of the Sea of Galilee (12:16) and concludes shortly after (12:29).
