86164 NASA 1969 APOLLO 12 SATURN V LAUNCH, LUNAR LANDING, MOON WALK, ECLIPSE

This 1969 color footage from NASA’s Apollo 12 mission depicts the launch of a Saturn V rocket, the second moon walk, an astronaut using a sample collection tool, the Lunar Module’s successful ascent from the moon’s surface, and a solar eclipse (TRT 29:28).

Test pattern and label: “Flight Load” (0:09). Though a circular field of vision, the surface of the moon races by, revealing craters and rocky terrain (0:20). A fiery ignition sequence explosion of yellow fire illuminated in darkness. The first S-IC stage of the Saturn V rocket SA-507 engine during takeoff in slow motion closeup. The same launch again from a longer distance, revealing the launch pad and umbilical tower of Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center in Florida (0:39). The Saturn V launch in ¾ profile, taken from the launch tower. Again in profile, revealing the retractable support arms of the umbilical tower (1:25). Closeup of thruster engines at the moment of ignition, as the second S-II stage of the rocket falls away to earth below, leaving the Command Module and Service Module. The module in orbit (1:55). The moon’s surface, viewed through a glass window (2:44). The upper docking tunnel of a Lunar Module (LM-6). The “Yankee Clipper” descends toward the moon’s surface, while maintaining its orbit, landing gear extended (4:47). The lunar lander continues its approach toward the Sea of Tranquility (6:33). The LM appears to lift away from the lunar surface with the aid of a descent engine (7:27). The craft viewed from a great distance, revealing the curvature of the moon (8:43). POV: A camera mounted on the LM shows the approaching the moon’s terrain (9:33). A distant flash of light in darkness. Exposure increases, revealing a partial view of the LM on the moon. A cut back to the LM camera shows NASA astronaut Pete Conrad exiting the craft for extravehicular activity (EVA) and climbing down a ladder to the surface of the moon (12:02). Conrad uses a sample collection tool to collect moon rocks and space dust from the moon’s surface (13:44). Conrad approaches the camera (14:38). A panorama of the lunar landscape. A moonwalk around the perimeter of the LM (14:47). A United States flag is revealed, standing next to a sizable crater and a satellite dish antennae (15:48). More footage from below the Antares, showing the moon’s spotty surface. In flight once more, the LM ascends away from the moon, maintaining its framed position in synchronized orbit with the camera. Slowly, the LM grows in size as it gains altitude (17:08). Light reflected on glass windows. The LM initiates a docking sequence and withdraws landing gear (20:25). The LM rotates into docking position, then draws closer and closer until it fills the frame (22:20). The Yankee Clipper takes off from the moon’s surface (24:58). A more detailed shot of the receding lunar surface reveals a complex patchwork of craters (25:41). Astronauts Pete Conrad and Alan Bean in a command module. Conrad shaves, Bean wears a baseball hat. In a second shot, Bean reviews a clipboard (26:01). The earth, viewed from space. Zoom in. The sun shines out from behind in a solar eclipse, producing a lens flare effect (26:41). A parachute deploys for the CM’s return and splashdown (28:35).
