This short historic film from 1940 shows the mounted policemen of the New York Police Department. It begins with the Remount School of Horsemanship and features horse trainers and veterinarians selecting, training and working with horses. The NYPD has had horse patrols since 1858 and often refers to them as “10 Foot cops”. At 6:40 a newly trained horse is shown patrolling the city with two veteran horses. At 8:49 some of the over 300 horses on patrol are shown leaving their stables, and at 9:04 working a parade or performing a rescue. At 9:16 the horse patrols near the liner SS Normandie and at 9:27 in Times Square for New Years. At 9:45 a police horse is retired to a barn to live out its life eating molasses, sugar and being fed by young girls.
