This is a 1956 black and white movie. It is an I&E film (Information and Education) presented by the Office of Armed Forces. The movie opens with a spotlight on a magazine surrounded by four hats representing the four divisions of the United States Armed Forces. The film is separated into several parts. The first part showcases some of the military’s new equipment. The second part showcases German Shepherds being trained for wartime in Germany. The third part features Frogmen spearfishing in the Virgin Islands. The camera zooms in and we see that it is Screen Magazine. The page turns and we see an animated kangaroo with its baby and the title, What’s New in the Service. A B-52 bomber is on the tarmac, crew at attention in front :47. The men get their equipment ready 1:00. The men wear helmets and oxygen tanks 1:15. The B-52 taxis down the runway 1:20. A turn of the knob turns the plane counterclockwise on the tarmac 1:41. The B-52 approaches the camera slowly 1:58. The B-52 practices turning in place 2:30. In Washington, the Navy unveils the Grasshopper, a weather measuring instrument 2:42. After being dropped by parachute the Grasshopper can extend its legs and put itself upright 3:00. The device records weather, raises its antenna and starts broadcasting data 3:25. An operator translates the data 3:35. In Virginia, the Army demonstrates its new X1 landing craft retriever 3:50. The wheels of the craft are 10 feet in diameter 4:02. The landing craft retriever heads to the beach 4:28. The X1 landing craft retriever heads right into the ocean to pick up a landing craft stranded on a sandbar 4:45. The landing craft is retrieved and pulled onto the beach 5:30. The logistical cargo carrier is featured 6:00. The carrier is 40 feet long. Each of the cars in the cargo carrier carry 15 tons through the snow 6:35. An animated chapel is shown and an animates horse approaches. An animated character reads about the Bill of Rights 7:15. An animation continues with the founding fathers 7:40. The book turns its page and now we see a picture of animated dogs and a man walking. On two dog bones the words say, Bone – Fido. Underneath is the word, soldier 7:54. The Army quartermaster school in Germany is featured. A sign says, “No Entry Beyond This Point”. A German Shepherd is shown 8:12. The narration from here is from the dog’s point of view 8:20. The dog begs 8:25. Several Germans with their dogs parade around the yard 8:40. This is a military training camp for dogs 9:05. The dogs show their technique for handling an armed suspect 9:30. German Shepherd undergoes a medical check 9:50. The inspecting officer approves the dog and he is caged in the back of a truck 10:10. An officer gives a briefing to potential dog handlers 10:30. The German Shepherd is assigned a handler and begins his training 10:45. The dogs go through an infiltration course riddled with barbed wire 10. The dogs go through an obstacle course 11:35. The decoy test – the final examination – is administered 11:50. Graduation day for the dogs 12:10. The page turns again and we see a new title: Frogmen’s Holiday 12:30. The first scene opens with divers on a boat in the Virgin Islands donning several air tanks 12:35. Men from the underwater demolition team take to the water 12:47. When not working the men take advantage of the water and go spearfishing 13:10. The men are equipped with aqualungs and are swimming in water 30 feet deep 13:25. Tropical fish are seen 13:50. The frog man fires and misses a game fish 14:40. The frogman takes a fish 15:13. Another fish is speared 15:30. The hunting is good. The frogman spears a shark 16:35. The frog man wrestles with the shark as he has him by the tail 16:55. The frog man stabs the shark in his underbelly and kills him 17:15. The page of the book turns again.
