97264 GASTRIC RESECTION FOR DUODENAL ULCER 1940s SURGERY FILM

This silent film shows an operation for a duodenal ulcer. The operation shown here was conducted by Dr. G. Arnold Stevens of Beverly Hills, who was a pioneer in this type of surgery and published several articles about it in the 1950s. Stevens was on the faculty of the University of California in that era.

A duodenal ulcer is a peptic ulcer that develops in the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). For patients suffering from stomach cancer or other problems like ulcers and bleeding, gastric surgery (resection of the stomach) is often a recommended course of treatment. Sometimes just a part of the stomach needs to be removed, but if needed, the entire stomach can be removed.
