95884 ” THE MAINE SHRIMP ” 1960s GULF OF MAINE FISHING INDUSTRY SHRIMPING BOOTHBAY

This color educational film is about catching shrimp off the coast of Maine. This is circa the late 1960s.

Titles: THE MAINE SHRIMP (as the surf crashes onto the beach) (:08-:21). Shrimp fishing boats off the coast of Maine. Maine Shrimp boat has his net in the water as the cold water crashes into the boat. A boat slowly rocks as the cold sea moves. Another boat tosses lightly. Fishermen on a boat pull up their nets from the blue sea as the boat rocks. The catch is dumped out onto the deck and then sorted out, trash fish are thrown back into the ocean. The net is put back and the work continues (:22-3:41). As the boat rocks, another net is poked. A boat heads back to port. Another boat cuts through the ice in the harbor. Its very cold and the boat moves through the icy harbor. A fishing boat heads for the unloading dock. At the wharf, fish/shrimp are transferred off the boat. Nets take the shrimp off. Women go through the shrimp and shrimp is cooked in red dye to ensure their freshness. Shrimp boxes. A giant net of shrimp. A machine tears the shrimp meat. Women remove bits of shell from the conveyor belt (3:42-7:03). Shrimp are placed into a giant machine. Shrimp is glazed with water, then packed, and weighed (7:03-8:00). A boat moves through Booth Bay Harbor, it’s called ‘The Dragon Lady.’ The boat leaves the harbor and heads out for the sea. A map that shows where shrimp can be found is pointed at. A finger presses on certain parts of the map. The red dots show where shrimp can be found. A man grabs a net. Shrimp nets are dropped into the sea (8:01-11:10). Men wait on the boat as the nets drag through the sea. A bird on the ships’s line. Nets are gathered and they contain shrimp caught in them. The shrimp is brought on deck and sifted through. Men set up a plankton net. The net is lowered into the sea (11:11-13:15). The net is recovered and there is more than shrimp – other marine life is gathered for food. Close on a shrimp larva. The fishermen maneuver the net. At a laboratory, men look at microscopes and study shrimp for various reasons. Shrimp is measured. Shrimp starts as male and then becomes a female years later. Scientists have shrimp in tanks and controlled temperatures (13:16-16:19). A boat rocks out at sea. Water heads for the beach and the surf crashes (16:20-17:03). End credits (17:04-17:24).
