95744 ” DRIVING AT NIGHT ” 1967 FORD DRIVER’S EDUCATION FILM

This is 1967 color, driver’s ed film was presented by the Ford Motor Company. The purpose of the movie is to illustrate safe driving techniques at dusk and at night, the importance of headlights and other safety measures to be taken while driving at night. The movie opens with cars driving down the highway – it is light outside. It becomes dark outside. A vehicle approaches over a hill and around the curve with lights in the face of the driver. Lights can be reflected in the rearview mirror. Lights also show the crossing of cars from side roads 1:00. If you are careful and don’t drive too fast, night driving can be safe and pleasant 1:10. Night begins when there is still light in the sky 1:18. It’s a good habit to turn on your lights before sundown 1:25. Dusk or twilight can be one of the most dangerous times to drive if you are not especially alert 1:40. Dark, overcast days can also be dangerous 1:50. Film demonstrates how a car turning its headlights on from far down the road can reduce the risk of an accident 2:24. The dashboard is shown and speed is reduced 2:39. If you drive too fast you can over drive your headlights 2:50. An animation shows the safe distance that headlights can illuminate the road for you. The distance is about 350 feet 2:56. At 60 miles an hour you will cover 350 feet in four seconds. You have 132 feet of reaction time and 180 feet for breaking. This leaves less than 40 feet for last minute reaction time – or less than 1 ½ seconds 3:35. Easing up on the gas pedal at night is the only answer 3:56. Flashers and flares should be used if you have a flat tire or are disabled 4:10. High beams can also be used to create a safer driving environment 4:20. Make sure your headlights are clean for maximum visibility 4:40. Some people leave their high beams on in oncoming traffic which can be dangerous 5:10. If this happens do not stare into the lights, look beyond the lights and onto the road 5:30. High beams reflected in the rearview mirror can be a blinding distraction 5:45. If you are behind somebody switch to low beams 5:52. Traffic lights can blend into other lights behind 6:10. A driver must be able to navigate glaring streets and dark ones 6:20. Always be on the alert for pedestrians 6:40. Bad weather coupled with darkness creates the most dangerous situation for driving 7:10. Sometimes it is better to pull over and call it a night 7:25. You can only drive safely when fully awake 7:35. Man falls asleep at the wheel 7:48. Stop for stretch or quit for the night 8:00.
