95324 BASIC PRINCIPLES OF POWER REACTORS ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION NUCLEAR REACTOR EDUCATIONAL FILM

This color animated educational/training film is about understanding the basic principles of power reactors. This was produced in 1962. This was made to explain nuclear reactors and how they produce steam. It explains basic components of a nuclear reactor.

Opening titles: The Atomic Energy Commission presents Basic Principles of Power Reactors, followed by a disclaimer (:08-:45). Uranium is discussed and on screen we see U-238 and U-235. An atom blinks on the screen. A neutron collides with U-238 and is captured, a U-235 may split if a neutron collides with it. Atomic power is born. Radioactive atoms are shown. How a chain reaction happens is shown and explained (:46-2:45). An even rate is the goal of a chain reaction to keep controlled power going. Fuel elements are shown and explained. A core inside a reactor is shown behind metal and/or concrete. Heat and coolants are explained and shown. A control rod is placed in to absorb the increasing numbers of neutrons. Water boils (2:46-5:20) How the water can make a functional plant. How to keep the water boiling without turning itself into steam. Lots of explanations while showing how to make the reactor work (5:21-6:35). The exterior of a nuclear power plant is shown (not animated). Different power reactors are shown along with engineers working at them. Many shots of different things being done by the workers: rods are inserted, sheets of metal sandwich things, a grid is made. A ceramic form of uranium is shown. A person tests his idea before using it. A coolant is tested (6:36-8:05). A reactor worker fills out his clipboard (8:06-8:12). End credits (8:13-8:26).
