94844 YESTERDAY’S NEWSREEL EARLY HOLLYWOOD EDISON MOVIE CAMERA TYPING CONTEST TRAIN WRECK

This black and white film is one of the episodes of “Yesterday’s Newsreels”, an early 1950s TV show made from the General Newsreel collection. It features eight segments of historic highlights. Capitol of Glamour 1905-1950 Hollywood Henry Ford and Thomas Edison demonstrate the 1888 movie camera (:43-1:00). The 1910 hills and orchards of Hollywood are panned. Workers pick fruit from trees (1:01-1:07). Producer Al Christie sets up a stage in 1911 for his Nestor Studios, first in Hollywood. 1919 Short comedy clips are shown, including actors Douglas Fairbanks, DW Griffith, Mary Pickford, and Charlie Chaplin. Short clips of a western are shown (1:08-2:38). Advancements include those made by a young Cecil B. DeMille. An outdoor lot is shown full of costumed extras. Crowds try to be cast. Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford ask the crowd to disperse (2:39-3:23). 1927, the building is shown where Al Jolson starred in the Jazz Singer. 1930s, spotlights highlight the glamour of Hollywood at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. Actors Hugh Herbert, Glenda April, George Jessel, Humphrey Bogart, John Barrymore, Betty Davis and husband, Basil Rathbone, Marie Wilson, Paul Muni, Errol Flynn, and Lili Damita arrive in tuxes and evening gowns with stoles (3:24-4:23). Keyboard Contest 1928 Top men and women typists compete, a state sign at each desk indicating where each is from (4:24-5:12). Personalities 1918 United States Surgeon General William Gorgas visits Panama by train (5:13-5:38). Lady Diana Duff Cooper (Viscountess Norwich) smiles for the camera. She is shown in her role as the Madonna in 1924 (5:39-5:57). Author Peter Kyne is shown (5:58-6:17). Historic Scenes of Death 1912 Crumbled wooden railway cars are strewn on the ground behind a derailed locomotive near Saugatuck, Connecticut. Workmen search for survivors in the wreckage as spectators watch, including women wearing 1912 long skirts, jackets, and hats (6:18-7:14). Fright at the Opera 1928 A giant sea elephant named Goliath sings for a crowd. A close-up is shown of his open mouth and head (7:15-8:20). Aviation 1928 A plane arrives after circling the globe in record time. The two pilots took their dog with them during the flight (8:21-9:13). Fashions of the Day 1928 A pretty woman models a $650,000 pearl necklace (9:14-9:52). 1930, Women wear chiffon dresses at a racetrack. A woman wears felt. Other women are shown in bright patterned chiffon dresses and slouch hats (9:53-10:16). Sports 1926 Men speed-walk in a Washington-Baltimore foot race. They pass 1920s cars. Bystanders wear 1920s caps. One of the eight woman walkers in a dress, hat with a flower, and carrying a purse is shown. Private Earl Olson crosses the finish line first (10:17-11:12). 1928, the Oxford crew prepares for the Boat Race against Cambridge. A Bobby in full uniform watches the rowers carry their boats to the water. The rowing race is shown from the side, overhead, and from the front as Cambridge wins (11:13-12:26).
