94644 ” JORDAN VALLEY ” 1940s TRAVELOGUE MOVIE DEAD SEA, JERICHO, JORDAN RIVER, PALESTINE

This short 1940 travelogue from British Instructional Films/British Pathe takes viewers on a tour of the Jordan Valley, from its origins at the Springs of Dan in the shadows of Mt. Hermon to the mouth of the river at the Dead Sea. The film opens with a map of the Mediterranean and Palestine, and the narrator discusses the route taken during the tour of the valley. Footage shows Mt. Hermon with snow on its peak (01:19). Viewers see where the Jordan River begins at the Springs of Dan (01:45), followed by shots of fields, and a Palestinian shepherd with is sheep. A person rides a horse over a bridge while cattle drink from the river. Herdsmen sit on the banks of the river next to the cattle. An ox and a donkey pull a plow as two men follow the animals (02:45). Sheep and cattle graze near the shore of Lake Hula. A man uses a stand-up raft to travel on the lake (03:52). Men and women sit and weave reeds from the lake into mats. The film shows several shots of the Jordan Valley (04:53). A farmer drives two mules pulling a plow. The film then takes viewers of the north shore of the Sea of Galilee (05:30), including the site of the Mount of Beatitudes, the remains of Capernaum and the ruins of its ancient synagogue, and a sailboat moves with the wind on the lake (06:00). A fisherman folds a throw net (07:13). Two men cast their nets out in the shallows of the lake. One man pulls in the net and examines his catch. Shepherds herd sheep on the slopes near the lake (08:14). Viewers see the city of Tiberias on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. The film shows the remains of a Roman aqueduct, Tiberias’ mosque, and people shopping in the market. The Jordan River leaves the Sea of Galilee (10:54). Men herd sheep and camels near the river. A combine harvester harvests what the narrator says is corn (11:31). Two men use scythes to harvest the crop. An aerial view shows the river as it flows through the valley toward Jericho (12:36), as well as the barren hills and mountains that form the Jordan Valley wilderness. Two trucks drive on the Jericho-Jerusalem road (13:56). A man stands at the ruins of Tel es-Sultan, site of the biblical Jericho inside the modern city. Viewers also see Jericho and its Pools of Elijah (14:43) and a small irrigation channel running through the city. The film shows the Jordan River and a Christian shrine commemorating the baptism of Jesus Christ (15:35). There is a good panoramic shot of the Dead Sea (16:06). Footage shows the barren landscape surrounding the area. Men shovel salt from the sea into small rail cars (16:59), and then the film ends with a final shot of the Dead Sea.
