This color educational film is about the way a supermarket is run and the various jobs within it. The store featured is Mayfair and this is copyright is 1958.
Title card: Behind the Scenes at the Supermarket (:07-:27). Exterior of a Mayfair Supermarket in the morning. The manager brings his son to the store before it’s open. They enter and start walking through the aisles. The manager puts on a white jacket, smiles at his son. The first thing the manager does is open the read door to the loading area behind the store. A truck backs up to it to deliver food. A man unloads vegetables/fruit. At the back of the market, this supply is cleaned. Lettuce is sprayed with water. Cartons of goods go down a conveyor belt onto a moving belt that brings them to the second floor storage area. Storage area has lots of boxes and food (:28-3:29). Frozen food is stored in a frozen food locker. Big pieces of meat are taken off hooks. Meat is pushed into a cold refrigerator. Meat Dept. manager shows the son what meat will be cut today. Hunks of meat are cut. Meat is then sent to be packaged. The meat is placed in cellophane (3:30-5:45). Each package of meat is weighed and then priced. Wrapped meat is ready for a refrigerated display case. Tons of meat is for sale. Produce is placed in that section, tons of fruit is ready for sale. A chute carries cans and paper goods down to the main floor to be opened and displayed. A price is stamped onto each can. Frozen food is also for sale and placed where that food goes for display. The manager looks at some sale signs being made by a sign maker (5:46-7:41). The manager’s secretary is met by the manager. A bookkeeper reviews the bills that must be paid. The manager allows his son to press a button that opens the doors and business is open. The manager’s wife comes to pick up the son, and shop, as the manager returns to work. Big trucks at the back of the store. Contents of the trucks are sent up conveyor belts and down chutes. Meat is cut and wrapped. Produce is put on display. Cans placed on shelves. Office workers at work. The manager sees his wife and son out of the store (7:42-9:59). End credits (10:00-10:06).
