91434 1949 FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION PROMO FILM “FRAUD FIGHTERS” FOOD & MEDICINE TESTING

This black & white educational film is about the FDA and that they make sure that what is in food actually is and that what medicine/cosmetics says it will do it actually does. It has a copyright date of 1949.

Opening titles: FRAUD FIGHTERS (:06-:29). Exterior of the FDA Building. People at work in an office. A man puts a device on another man. A man at a desk looks at an ad that guarantees a lot that it will do, its called ‘Elixirex.’ Exterior of a New York office. An Inspector who works for the FDA talks to a woman outside a house. She is going to show him where the ‘Elixirex’ is made. He goes into her garage to see how the product is made and what’s in it, are the conditions clean, etc. The Inspector goes back to his desk and then to a trucking company. He speaks with another man. An order slip (:30-2:56). The Inspector visits a woman who uses the ‘Elixirex’ regularly. The woman hands a bottle of the used product to him, he tags it. The Inspector looks at the death certificate of a man. People look at the bottle of ‘Elixirex’ in a laboratory. The door for the FDA. A scientist turns in his finished report that ‘Elixirex’ is nothing more than water and alcoholic extract of weeds from the makers backyard. The FDA realizes that the product is a fraud. A man holds the bottle. The men review a list of what the product claims to do. It does nothing. The maker receives a year in jail, she walks into the office of the U.S. Attorney. A hand puts a lock on a door. Bottles and photos in a room (2:57-5:54). A machine that gives a healing power from staring into the colored lights. People review the machine paperwork. A man on a phone. He types at a typewriter. A man enters a building. Barrels are hoisted off of a ship. A man checks barrels of olives. Men remove wine bottles from a shipment. A man is an expert tea tester and he looks over tea. A man and a woman enter a door that reads: FDA, Division of Microbiology Microanalytical Section. A man removes a draw that has different samples bottled up. A man reviews pages in a book, close on a bug in the book. Adhesive tape is tested. Different flyers about vitamin products. Close on tubes holding various pills (5:55-8:43). A scientist pours pills out and tests them. Experiments are being performed on white mice. A mouse is held in a hand. A woman injects a needle into a bottle. A woman performs an experiment. A doctor writes at a desk (8:44-10:11). Books on a bookshelf. A scientist looks at and performs an experiment on a pea. A man cuts into a potato and sniffs it. He then tastes it. Another takes some cream from a can with a knife, a woman follows. A man shakes up a liquid in a bottle. A man tests dyes. Another uses test tubes. A man pours canned food into a bowl. A woman shops at a grocery store with a child. The Inspector enters a store. He climbs stairs, walks down a street. The Inspector enters the FDA building (10:12-12:43). No end credits.
