91194 “ DRUGS: THE CHILDREN ARE CHOOSING ” 1969 DRUG ABUSE AWARENESS & DISCUSSION FILM

This educational film is presented by the University of California and Dr. James Fadiman, who is an American Ph.D. and writer, known for his research on micro-dosing psychedelics. The film is footage from an experimenting panel discussion on drugs, consisting of 6th- and 7th-grade students, their teachers, and a set of experts on creating a dialogue about drugs. It was created as part of a seven film series.

The film begins with “UC – University of California” written on screen (00:08), followed by “EMC – Extension Media” (00:20). Title banner “Drugs” (00:28) “The Children are Choosing (00:34) “The Need for Dialogue” (00:39). Dr. James Fadiman introduces the educational film from a studio (00:47). Participants from the experiment are seated in a room with chairs and couches (01:25). One teacher opens the first segment of the panel-discussion between teachers and students (01:38). Close-up footage of the students’ expressions while listening to their teacher (02:16). The students state their opinions on by one (02:43). The conversation about drugs continues between teachers and students (04:01). Dr. James Fadiman presents the second part of the panel-discussion between the experts and teachers (09:53). The children observe while the teachers and experts discuss the precious segment of the panel, and the experts comment on their observations and provide guidance on how to improve the dialogue (10:11). Dr. James Fadiman introduces an improvised panel between only the students and one expert for guidance, per request of the students (18:02). The students are seated in a circle on the floor for a relaxed set-up (18:43). Dr. James Fadiman introduces the final segment of the experiment (23:43), where teachers and experts discuss the result of the improvised panel between only the students (24:13). Dr. Fadiman concludes this educational film by commenting on the problems and improvements in the dialogue, and the attitudes towards drugs of both the teachers, students, and experts (29:12).

The film is produced by KQED – Educational Services, in San Francisco to function as a manual to guide teachers and parents on talking about drugs with children, with Joanne M. Mock as producer-director and Carol Vander Ende as assistant producer. Sound is by Barry Brown and cameras are by Blair Stapp and Allen Willis. The film is edited by Lela Smith.
