90694 1950s ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA PROMOTIONAL FILM “SUNNY STRIKES” BASEBALL SPRING TRAINING

Sunny Strikes is a 1950s film promoting St. Petersburg, Florida by highlighting two major sporting events that occur in the town: professional baseball’s spring training and the Annual Tarpon Roundup. The film opens with a group of boys playing a game of baseball in a vacant lot. Two boys fish at a pond with makeshift fishing poles (01:23). An aerial view shows St. Petersburg, FL (02:00). Professional baseball players train in St. Petersburg. At Al Lang Field (02:25), viewers see players training from the following teams: New York Yankees, Kansas City A’s, Chicago White Sox, Brooklyn Dodgers, Washington Nets, Pittsburg Pirates, Boston Red Sox, St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Redlegs, Milwaukee Braves, and Philadelphia Phillies. People wait at Al Lang Field to get tickets to watch the games (04:11). The Braves play a game the St. Louis Cardinals. A Cardinals player signs autographs for young fans (06:26). There is another aerial shot of St. Petersburg, this one focusing on the coast and beaches. Men fish from a pier. The film shows the trophy for the Annual Tarpon Roundup competition (07:58). A father and a son pull a car into the Gulf Winds Hotel (08:22). They then walk out onto the white sandy beach. A beach guide greets them and directs them where to go to find a fishing guide. The father-son duo cruise out to sea on boat (10:15); viewers see the Sunshine Skyway. They fish off the boat and catch a small shark (11:22) and then a tarpon. The latter jumps out of the water as it fights against the fishing line. The guide pulls the catch aboard. People crowd around Hubbard’s Pier at Pass-A-Grille Beach to see the catch and official weigh-in (13:30). The father and son pose with the hanging tarpon, concluding the film.
