90214 1960s ST. LOUIS MISSOURI “TWIN RIVER TITAN” MISSISSIPPI & MISSOURI RIVER AMERICA! TV SHOW

This 1960s color educational film about Saint Louis, Missouri was part of the weekly TV series “America!” that was narrated by actor Jack Douglas. A statue commemorates French King Louis XV, for whom Saint Louis is named after. A monument marks the spot founder Pierre Liguest landed in 1764 (1:00-1:37). The Courthouse Building held the Dred Scott trials (1:38-1:43). The Gateway Arch (completed 1965), is still under construction in the film. Also at the riverfront is the S.S. Admiral riverboat. A calliope keyboard is played. A group of children in 1960s clothing are shown (1:44-3:44). Busch Stadium is home to the St. Louis Cardinals, shown at batting practice and playing against the Astros (3:45-4:22). Forest Park has multiple tourist attractions. Several displays of the St. Louis Art Museum are shown. The Jewel Box is a floral display. The Zoological Park includes polar bears in training. A baby wolf chews on the keeper’s pants. An 1,800-pound walrus swims at the Aquatic House. Children feed giraffes. The “Muny Opera” is an outdoor municipal theatre (4:23-12:12). Downtown St. Louis is explored. The Meeting of the Waters is a fountain sculpture. A plaque marks the home of William Clark of Lewis and Clark fame, as well as home of children’s poet Eugene Field. Children explore the National Museum of Transport (12:13-14:20). The Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows is shown under construction, including sculptures (14:21-15:02). A miniature train crosses the grounds at the Busch estate. A statue commemorates Ulysses S. Grant at the Grant Farm. Children sit in a miniature stage coach, photographed by their mother using a 1960s Polaroid camera. Macaws perform at the bird show. The gate is made of Civil War rifle barrels (15:03-16:50). The Missouri Botanical Gardens has the Climatron, a Geodesic Dome Conservatory (16:51-17:42). The windmill arms turn at the Das Bevo restaurant. The Cheshire Inn limousine is shown outside and the Inn’s restaurant furnishings shown inside. A two-decker bus takes guests into town (17:43-19:05). Gaslight Square is an entertainment district. Shown is the Crystal Palace, and an interview with its owner. Signs share are for the Bella Rosa, The Three Fountains, Kotobuki, Port St. Louis, and Smokey Joe’s. The Crystal Palace has an Egyptian dancer. Signs shown are for the Gilded Cage, Lorelei, Marty’s (with singing waiters and waitresses), Dino Pizza Parlor, and Carl’s (19:06-23:30).
