89504 “THE HEART OF THE NAVY” 1950s U.S. NAVY HUMANITARIAN WORK BERLIN BLOCKADE / AIRLIFT KOREAN REFUGEES

Dating to 1956, this black & white film showcases how the United States Navy has helped the people of the Free World in moments of crisis. This includes the Berlin Blockade and Berlin Airlift, feeding refugees in Korea, assisting American farmers during a blizzard that threatens their cattle herds, flooding in Mexico, a Greek earthquake, Vietnam refugee crisis, and more. Copyright 1956.

Opening: U.S. Navy presents “Heart of the Navy” (:07-:29). Grim newspaper headlines of various world crises: starving refugees in Korea, evacuation of North Vietnamese refugees to South Vietnam, earthquake in Greece, flooding in Mexico, etc. U.S. Navy ships on the high seas. Sailors at attention. Ship goes by Statue of Liberty (:30-1:55). Providing food to starving South Koreans. Berlin, Germany during the Berlin Crisis in 1948. U.S. Navy aircraft brings supplies as part of the Berlin Airlift. Men move supplies. Children eat candy brought by American pilots (1:56-3:24). Navy officers discuss. Men move supplies. 1949 – in the U.S., Navy planes brought in supplies due to a horrible blizzard. Hay was put aboard planes. Snow on the ground. Feed and hay provided for cattle in Arizona (3:25-5:10). Earthquake in Greece in 1953. This was the Ionian earthquake also known as the Great Kefalonia earthquake which struck the southern Ionian Islands on August 12. Greek isles were decimated by this and a series of other quakes. Destruction is everywhere. Navy ships head in their direction. Navy men give supplies and assist with the situation (5:11-6:45). In 1954, Vietnamese refugees were helped by the U.S. Navy. Over 100,000 civilians were transported to South Vietnam. In Hanoi, the Navy also helped. Smiling child (6:46-8:13). Navy ships assist in Mexico after a terrible hurricane. Helicopters. Supplies are brought in. Trucks take supplies. Flooded areas of Mexico. People dragged out of flood waters. Children are offered food. A Navy man and a little girl. Navy men talk with children (8:14-10:07). South Korean orphanage, called the Eden Orphanage (sponsored by Marine Aircraft Group 12) is visited by Navy sailors. Children play outside. A group of children sing. Cargo is moved out and hoisted. People walk with goods given by the U.S. Montage recapping the Navy’s strong support during times of crisis. Aerial shot of the fleet on the move. Korean men smile. American sailors stand (10:08-12:09). End credits (12:10-12:20).
