89314 1950 DOLE FRUIT COCKTAIL PROMO FILM “RAINBOW HARVEST” HAWAII PINEAPPLE & CALIFORNIA GRAPES

This 1950 film presented by the Hawaiian Pineapple Company (:08) is a promotion for the Dole Fruit Cocktail invented in the Barron-Gray Canning Company plant. The cocktail includes cherries, peaches, pears, grapes and pineapples. The film shows this colorful variety of fruits from their harvest and as they go through canning processes. It was produced by Jerry Fairbanks Inc. (:18) and opens with a span of a cherry tree orchard (:28) in the San Joaquin Valley, California. The famous vinelands of lower San Joaquin Valley follow, (1:42) rich with Thomas seedless grapes. The girdling manner used for every vine providing fruit for the Dole Fruit Cocktails is shown (1:58). Pineapples from Hawaii will also be added to the cocktail (2:17). (Today pineapples are not harvested for this purpose, as it is too expensive to grow them in Hawaii). Cherries which are the last to bloom and the first to ripen undergo inspections to be added to the mix (2:38). The picking process has not changed much, though growing methods have changed (2:48). Amidst Barron-Gray Packing Company boxes, an inspector checks the picked fruits (2:56). The ring used to check the size of pears (3:08). These will be scientifically ripened at the right time for use. Fruit is loaded into boxes and an inspector (4:01) checks batches prior to shipment. For these checks, the orchard superintendent and his aide work closely together (4:18). Dole boxes loaded atop the trailer (4:32) will be sent to a receiving station where the pears will undergo cold storage (4:41). From here they will be moved into the ripening rooms (4:52). A giant harvesting machine heads through the pineapple orchards in the Hawaiian Islands (5:01). Dole operated the largest pineapple cannery in Honolulu (5:27). Back in California, the grapes are plucked by pickers (5:32) and peaches are put to the ring test (5:59). As five different types of fruit are to be used for the cocktail’s, all of the truck loads must arrive at the same time (7:05). In the San Joaquin packing plant, shipments arrive and unload in the receiving station (7:20). Boxes of fruit are sent to the factory through escalators (7:43). Peaches are automatically graded for size and are set atop a knife which starts a small cut so they are cut evenly (8:29). They are then picked up by holder cups (8:33) and sliced by a revolving blade (8:40). These are washed, sorted, peeled and given a second wash (8:57). Pears are separated by size (9:58) and at their peak point of ripeness will be sent to the processing machines (10:28). These are placed into rotating claws and a knife cuts off the stems (10:42) while another machine slices them in half (11:02). The cores and stems are removed and other imperfections are removed (11:17). They will be diced (11:38) and any undersized fruits are dropped through a screen. Bouncing green grapes are seen heading to be stemmed, graded, washed and inspected (12:11). These are sorted and distributed in stainless steel cans and will then head up to the cocktail line (13:19). Pineapples roll into the Honolulu plant (13:36) with native Hawaiians conducting inspections (13:51). A machine developed by the company removes the outer shells and cores and shoots the fruit out in cylindrical form (14:04). Imperfections are removed and these are chopped into small bits (14:41). In the California plant, the incorporation process begins (14:49) which will add all five fruits together. The cans are filled by revolving fillers (15:45) as attendants push the fruit into portion cups at the bottom of the machine (15:48). The filled cans are weighed and topped with syrup (16:40). A chemist takes samples of the syrup (16:59) for quality checks. Air is removed from the cans through an automatic unit (17:09) and these are then sealed under a vacuum (17:14). The cans are sterilized and sent to the labelling room (17:33). A few samples of the fruit cocktail cans are weighed (18:02). The syrup is separated from the fruit and the fruit is weighed separately again (18:08). A hydrometer test is conducted for clarity and sugar content (18:25). The Dole Fruit Cocktail can at the end of its tests and checks in the factory leads into a woman holding the can at home (16:13). A few recipes for follow and include a fruit cocktail refrigerator pie with cornflake crust (20:13), a fruit cocktail jello mold (20:26), and an upside-down cake (21:05). The film concludes after a span of puddings topped with the cocktail as well as parfaits (21:38). The End.
