This black & white film, one of the episodes of the program “The 20th Century” narrated by Walter Cronkite, is about the Battle of Arnhem, a major battle of the World War 2 at the vanguard of the Allied Operation Market Garden. It was fought in and around the Dutch towns of Arnhem, Oosterbeek, Wolfheze, Driel, and the surrounding countryside from September 17–26, 1944. This is circa 1960.

A map of Germany and what the key to attack is. Eisenhower rose through the ranks over the next thirty years and became one of the most important Allied generals of World War II, being promoted to General of the Army in 1944. Eisenhower speaks to officers. Planes on an airbase. Troops are given their rations, troops at the ready (:15-2:02). British General R.E. Urquhart speaks. Tanks and cars move down the streets. German troops. Airborne troops. Walter Cronkite speaks to Henry Knap (2:03-3:28). Sept .17, 1944. Planes and gliders will take off and split into two groups. Planes take off towing gliders. Belgian/Dutch border. Map is shown with a diagram. Planes in the sky. General Kurt Student speaks, he was a German general in the Luftwaffe during World War II. Planes go overhead. Gliders go in first at Arnhem. Most gliders make it. An explosion in the distance. Paratroopers jump into Arnhem (3:29-6:59). Parachute brigade charge in. Lt. Col. J.D. Frost, British Army Officer, speaks. Germans fire rockets and mortar shells, fire at the Allies. Allies take cover. Allied troops and tanks (7:00-8:33). Henry Knap speaks (8:34-9:33). Frost and his troops take on the Germans on Sept. 18, 1944. A battle, fighting, buildings on fire. People wave at the Allies. A map that shows advancing on Germany (9:34-10:50). Paratroopers drop in at Arnhem. Germans are forewarned, they shoot at the sky. Tanks and trucks fire explosives. British are pinned down. Henry Knap speaks with Walter Cronkite again (10:51-13:15). Troops try and advance but are under heavy German fire. Germans throw bombs, tanks move through the streets. Buildings on fire. A map shows where the backup is (13:16-14:41). German troops continue their barrage. Tanks explode. Supplies are pushed out of a plane with parachutes. Some of the weaponry falls into German hands. Troops move quickly through neighborhoods. Troops run up a hill. POWS rounded up by the Allies. A map shows Arnhem and then where the Allies are coming from (14:42-17:01). In Arnhem, the battle continues. Germans fire artillery. Machine gun fire. Sept. 21, 1944 in Arnhem. germans use flamethrowers and Frost and his men surrender. The battle is over. Germans held strong. A swastika flag is unfurled. Sept. 21-25, the Germans continue to shell the British who are near the Rhine. Injured and wounded (17:02-19:54). General Lewis H. Brereton speaks (19:55-20:55). General Kurt Student speaks (20:56-21:34). General R.E. Urquhart speaks (21:35-22:21). Urquhart and his men evacuate and never surrender, men row away in a boat (22:22-22:51). No end credits
