88264 POST-WWII GERMANY LUTHERAN WORLD ACTION MOVIE Reel 1 of 2

Made in 1950 by Lutheran World Action, a group that was working in Germany to rebuild the society after the war, THE TWO KINGDOMS tells the story of a refugee family struggling with the postwar problems of homelessness, poverty and unemployment. They have drifted away from the church. The father in particular, puts his hope in the possibility of Germany’s again becoming a great slate. The family receives both material and spiritual help from a Lutheran relief worker and a Lutheran pastor, himself a refugee. Yet the father’s basic attitude does not change until his daughter is found guilty of counterfeiting. He realizes he is partly to blame and that God’s law is of first importance. The Lutheran relief worker, seeing that his work has finally had some result, resolves to remain in Germany to continue his work.

During the Second World War (1941-45), the National Lutheran Council mobilized American Lutherans for action to support the troops, coordinate chaplains, provide assistance at home for the workers in the new defense industries, and other similar tasks. During and after this war, it helped sponsor a major fund drive, Lutheran World Action, which raised millions of dollars for war relief through films like this one.

Together with the LCMS, the NLC cooperated in a new group, Lutheran World Relief, which shipped more than a billion pounds of relief supplies to troubled areas around the world in the 20 years after 1945. The NLC also coordinated the assistance for European Lutheran churches, and resettled war refugees in the United States and Canada. It was sort of a private version of the Marshall Plan.

Motion picture films don’t last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we’ve worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies — including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you’d like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we’d love to hear from you.
