The X-15 comes in for a safe landing. Project Excelsior gondola in New Mexico. Project Excelsior was a series of parachute jumps made by Col. Joseph Kittinger of the United States Air Force in 1959 and 1960 from helium balloons in the Stratosphere. The purpose was to test the Beaupre multi-stage parachute system. 102,800 feet above sea level, Kittinger jumps and — it’s almost 20 miles straight down. His parachute is opened and he sails safely to the ground. (:43-4:30). Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. Discoverer 14 spy satellite launch. Discoverer was used in the Corona program managed by Advanced Research Projects Agency of the Department of Defense and the United States Air Force. Discoverer 14 is launched on a high parabolic profile. C-119s stand by in the distant Pacific to get a photographic capsule ejected by the Discoverer via a parachute. The men in the C-119 retrieve it. The crew shakes hands. Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii. The crew of the C-119 is applauded and given awards for a job well done.
